The V-belt drive operates with 2 - 3% lower efficiency than a flat belt. Slip reduces the power transmitting capacity of the flat belt drive. Also, V-belts allow minimal slip and higher friction, resulting in increased power transmitting capacity.
V-Belts slipping can occur due to incorrect sizing of the drive, inadequate tension in the belt, worn sheave grooves or damaged tensile cords within the belt. These factors can decrease the effectiveness of the belt in transmitting power, resulting in slipping.
If the top of the belt extends beyond 1/16 inch from the outer surface of the pulley, it indicates wear, either on the groove or the belt itself. This wear can significantly reduce the remaining belt life by up to 50 percent.
