Water hammer occurs in any piping system where valves are used to control the flow of liquids or steam. It is a result of a high-pressure shockwave that creates a knocking noise when a fluid in motion is forced to change direction or stop abruptly.
During air pressure testing of a new valve in the closed position, leakage past the seats is collected and bubbled through water. To qualify as bubble-tight, no bubble should be observed in a prescribed period.
