Working Mechanism

The circuit breaker has a bimetallic strip and an electromagnet to protect from both shortcircuit and overcurrent conditions.
When a constant current is flowing through the conductor, the bimetallic strip gets heated and bends.
In such conditions, the mechanical latch (in the circuit breaker) opens the contacts and interrupts the flow of current.
During short circuit conditions current rises suddenly, which causes the electromagnet displacement of the plunger in the solenoid or tripping coil.
The plunger hits the trip lever and activates the latch mechanism, causing the contacts to open and interrupt the current flow.
