Irwin 26376 tap / die set is used to create screw threads. The set includes a machine screw plug tap, hexagon dies, a fractional plug tap, metric plug tap and thread plug tap. The kit also contains threading tools, such as an adjustable die stock, plain die stock, hexagon dies, an adjustable handle tap wrench, two-in-one tap wrench, t-handle wrench, 16 leaf metric thread pitch gauge and 18 leaf standard thread pitch gauge.
A. The cutting edges of a plug tap have a less pronounced taper. This results in a plug tap with a more aggressive cutting action than a bottoming tap but less aggressive than a taper tap.
A. The chamfer's primary function is to allow the first few cutting teeth to make progressively deeper cuts. This reduces the amount of force required by the user to spin the tap as well as the tool's wear.
A. Chamfer guides the tap into the hole and provides a smooth entry for the tap as it begins to cut or form the initial threads, resulting in longer tap tool life. Chamfering the hole also results in a stronger, higher-quality thread.
